Measuring Cup

0

I have a simple way to measure solid vegetable shortening and peanut butter. I found this method in a cookbook years ago: If you want to measure 1/2 cup shortening, fill a measuring cup with 1/2 cup cold water. Then add enough shortening to raise the water level to the 1-cup measure, making sure the shortening is completely immersed. Pour off all of the water. Likewise, if you’re measuring 1/4 cup of shortening, use 3/4 cup of water, etc. —S.W., Mosinee, Wisconsin

I keep a chopstick in my flour and sugar canisters and use it to quickly level off the ingredient in a measuring cup with no mess.

Press shortening into a dry measuring cup with a spatula to make sure it is solidly packed without air pockets. With a metal spatula or flat side of a knife, level with the rim. Shortenings come in sticks and may be measured like butter.

As a substitute for 1 cup of self-rising flour, place 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a measuring cup. Add all-purpose flour to measure 1 cup.

So, you’re having a Halloween party for the kids and you need some Halloween Finger Foods to serve. Of course you can serve the standard fare like Chicken Nuggets, Hot Dogs and Chips but this is Halloween, so let’s be a bit more creative. You can easily make some fun Party Food that the kids will tell all their friends about. You can have the coolest party in the neighborhood!

So let’s start with some Green Slime Punch. This makes a nice center piece for your Halloween party snacks and you will be adding some special effects to make it really spooky. You will need a clear punch bowl for this to work correctly. It will also work if your punch bowl is tinted, although it will probably change the color. We have listed the recipe below. Feel free to improvise with the ingredients to suit your taste.

Here is the recipe:

Green Slime Punch

Ingredients:

2 cups boiling water
1 pkg. (8-serving size) Lime Flavor Gelatin
2 cups cold orange juice
1 bottle (1 liter) club soda or Ginger Ale, chilled
ice cubes
1 pt. (2 cups) orange or
lime sherbet, slightly softened
1 orange, thinly sliced
1 lime, thinly sliced

Preparation:

Stir boiling water and dry gelatin together in  a pyrex measuring cup and let sit at least 2 minutes until completely dissolved.
Just before serving; Pour gelatin mixture into your punch bowl
Stir in juice. Cool to room temperature.
Add seltzer or Ginger Ale and ice; stir.
Add scoops of sherbet and fruit slices.

So here you have a creepy green punch for the kids to drink for Halloween. The green gelatin give a nice algae green color to the punch and the sherbet produces a foamy scum  layer. Now it’s time to make this Halloween punch extra special. Take about two or three glow sticks and place them at the base of the punch bowl. Then wrap a towel over the glow sticks to hide them. This will give a nice radioactive glow to the punch.
